Extra Curricula Exam Success!!

As well as studying for their University exams students have also been hard at work training and studying at the
Sunderland University Aikido Club.(As part of the ‘University Sports Sunderland ’, the University (Zanshin) Aikido Club has been running for over 15 years).Having recently taken part along with the University Judo squad in the Sunderland International Festival of Martial Arts helping to raise over £1800 for Cancer Research UK .  The Aikido students have also achieved success in their recent grading examinations. 

On a more serious note, one of the successful students along with two friends was recently involved in a bag snatching/ambush incident.

As they walked past the Royalty Theatre around midnight on Saturday 19^th May, a youth who they had previously noticed cycling around suddenly ran up from behind them and snatched one of their bags.  As he made off towards his bike, which he had previously parked against a lamppost, the student in question instinctively grabbed the bag.  She put up a positive and tenacious struggle lasting some seconds.  Until the thief bodily picked up his bike and swung it at her.  She managed to move and deflect the bike as it came crashing down towards her. But in doing so she lost her grip on the bag and the thief took his chance to escape.

She later said that the Aikido classes she had taken at the University had probably been a factor in the way she had avoided serious physical injury during the attack.

The police were called to the incident and were very prompt and supportive in their response.
